Buying or selling a cemetery plot through GraveListing? Use this checklist to complete the transfer with the cemetery office. The cemetery, not GraveListing, controls the official transfer of the plot, crypt or niche.

Cemetery-office transfer steps

  • Confirm the exact plot, crypt or niche: cemetery name, section, lot, grave, crypt or niche number, and the number of interments it allows.
  • Confirm who is named as the current owner or rights holder in the cemetery office records, and that the seller is that person or is authorized to transfer the rights.
  • Ask the cemetery office for its transfer form, its transfer fee, and any identification, proof of ownership or other documents it requires from the buyer and the seller.
  • Complete and sign the cemetery transfer form exactly as the cemetery office directs, and return it to the cemetery office with the documents it asks for.
  • Pay the cemetery transfer fee and any other cemetery charges directly to the cemetery, as the cemetery office directs.
  • Ask the cemetery office to confirm in writing, in the buyer’s name, that the transfer has been recorded and what rights the buyer now holds.
  • Keep copies of the signed transfer form, the cemetery confirmation, and all receipts.

What the buyer pays the cemetery directly

  • The cemetery transfer fee, if the cemetery charges one.
  • Opening and closing charges, if they are due at the time of transfer or burial.
  • Any other cemetery charges the cemetery office states are payable, such as administration, record or memorial charges.

These amounts are set by the cemetery, not by GraveListing. Ask the cemetery office for the exact amounts before you agree to a purchase, and do not assume they are included in the price shown in a listing unless the listing says so.

What GraveListing does and does not do

GraveListing is a listing service. It connects buyers and sellers and publishes listings. GraveListing holds no funds and is not a party to the transfer. GraveListing does not collect the purchase price, does not hold money in trust, does not complete the cemetery transfer, and does not guarantee that a cemetery will accept a transfer. Payment for a plot, crypt or niche is arranged between the buyer and the seller, and all cemetery fees are paid to the cemetery directly.

Before you pay

  • Verify the plot details and the seller’s rights with the cemetery office.
  • Confirm the total amount the cemetery will charge, in addition to the seller’s price.
  • Confirm, in writing from the cemetery office if possible, that the transfer can be recorded in the buyer’s name.
